Workshop for graduate students “Teaching in Higher Education”

Learning outcomes
The postgraduate students will learn to:

– Design a syllabus
– Plan lectures and seminars (tutorials)
– Establish relations with students and administrative staff
– Assess students.

The planned activities will include two blocks: morning (group work: get-to-know activities, setting goals, discussion) and afternoon (pairwork: designing individual syllabus, plans, assessment methods, presenting these to the group). The workshop will include follow-up on each student’s practical work and teaching practice.

Preparation:
Before the workshop, each student is asked to write a short paragraph on their planned course, workshop, seminar, etc. indicating the main idea of it. The course can vary in length and depth (e.g., a course on Linguistic Anthropology, a workshop on methodology, a seminar on publishing, etc.).

The language of the course is English.

14:00-16:00 – Session III
16:00-16:30 – Coffee break
16:30-18:00 – Session IV

The bnumber of students who can participate is limited.

Laura Siragusa gained her BA and MA in Linguistics at the University of Pisa in 1999 after which she worked as a teacher of Italian, English, and Russian in miscellaneous countries all over the world. In 2009 she embraced a new research project on Vepsian revitalization and completed an MRes in Linguistic Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen followed by a PhD which she completed in 2012. Since 2012 she has been working as a researcher and teacher at the University of Tartu and Aberdeen. In September 2017 she joined a program on Indigenous Studies at the University of Helsinki.
