In the summer of 1993, Thalia Germanica – an international society for research into the history of German-language theatre abroad – was founded in two Estonian cities, Tartu and Tallinn. This was less than two years after the restoration of independence of the republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The topic of theatre brought together Germanists, historians, theatre and music researchers, sociologists and others. The initiators of the organisation were Evald Kampus (Tartu) and Laurence P. A. Kitching (Burnaby, Canada). Furthermore, Horst Fassel (Tübingen) and Paul S. Ulrich (Berlin) in particular have made great contributions to the continuation and expansion of Thalia Germanica. The society also started to issue its own series of studies, of which 16 volumes have now been published.

This time, the contributions and discussions at the conference will be devoted to the following focal points: paradigms in researching the history of German-language theatre abroad; interrelationships between national and German-language stages; examples of research projects by institutes and working groups; networks of theatre makers, etc. The round table discussion on 3 June will also examine the future of research into German theatre abroad. The conference will bring together scholars from Germany, Austria, the UK, Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia and Estonia.
